The prequel to the Mario series, Yoshi's Island features baby Mario being carried around by the ever-faithful Yoshi. The player controls Yoshi, defending Mario at all costs, while engaging in the signature Mario style of platform gameplay, punctuated by challenging puzzles.
While Yoshi sports his usual tongue-attack, he comes with some upgrades this time around. He can collect eggs, which will bounce along behind him until thrown. Power-ups transform the goofy green dinosaur into a multitude of vehicles, including a racecar or helicopter.
Yoshi's Island boasts among the most highly detailed graphics ever featured in any SNES game, thanks to the SuperFX 2 graphics processor on the cartridge. This allowed the game to achieve unprecedented feats, such as gigantic bosses filling most of the screen.
In many ways the game departed from the traditional style of the Mario series. However, the core gameplay is still there, along with some clever changes. Overall, this was a fresh and playful experience for Mario fans, or a unique adventure for anyone else.
