The modern kart racing genre was defined by Super Mario Kart on the SNES. The game took advantage of the console's Mode 7 graphics to provide a pseudo-3D look, with scenery whizzing by.
Rather than adhere to the traditional racing constraints, Mario Kart brought a number of powerups and quirks to the track. Nothing beats the sense of malicious glee you get from dropping banana peels to slow your competitors, or whacking the racer in front of you with a turtle shell.
The mood is enhanced with the game's selection of twenty tracks. Each recreates a location from the Mario games, like Bowser's Castle. Dodging lava pits and jumping over water on sandy beaches makes sure each race is pulse pounding and challenging.
The controls hold up surprisingly well, even for players accustomed to modern analog racers. The d-pad is precise and responsive, allowing you to put your racer right where you want to be.
For classic, timeless kart racing antics, there's nothing that tops Super Mario Kart.
