The shoot-em-up genre was largely populated by bland technical games until Starwing appeared. Taking advantage of the SuperFX processor on its cartridge, Starwing was the first true 3D game on the SNES.
Blending this graphics coup with dynamic characters and an engrossing plot, the game was an instant classic.
Each level of Starwing features a view behind your ship, as you blast your way over an embattled landscape or quadrant of space. Your wingmen will frequently radio warnings, or ask for help. Their personalities are distinct, and you'll soon expect Slippy to get in trouble, or Falco to advise you to "Do a barrel roll!"
Play progresses between levels with story interludes, and a map screen, allowing you to decide what path to take next. Your decisions make a difference in the game's difficulty and plot, allowing for massive replay value and your choice of the type of scenery you'll be fighting through next.
Starwing began the legendary Star Fox franchise, and should not be missed by any gamer.
