Donkey Kong Country marked the redesign of the Donkey Kong franchise and a fresher, updated version of the eponymous ape.
The gameplay is mostly standard platform fare – DK's banana stash has been stolen and the player must run through the jungle collecting the loose bananas. Gameplay is enhanced with rideable animals, such as the rhino, ostridge, and a frog, each with their own strengths.
DK's friend Diddy can also be controlled by the player, using a tag-team style for 2 player mode. Diddy is smaller and faster than DK, but he's also a bit weaker. A second player can join in and take control of either ape, using teamwork to clear the levels.
Sharp, pre-rendered 3D graphics give the game world a cartoony look, and emphasize the game's goofball antics.
While later games in the series would vastly expand and enhance the gameplay, DKC 1 remains noteworthy for its imaginative and goofy plot, its unusual and attractive graphics, and a thoroughly enjoyable two-player mode.
